Intuit’s Omar Green, director of strategic mobile initiatives, has been helping guide the company’s various business units build mobile solutions for the past three years.
Last week, he sat down with Derek Kerton and shared Intuit’s mobile journey with members of the Telecom Council of Silicon Valley, an organization that connects decision-makers across the telecom ecosystem.
The theme of the mobile forum was Device as a Service. Green had plenty to share around GoPayment, an Intuit product that lets anyone who sells a product or service process credit cards and checks “on the spot” using their smartphone or tablet. Green also offered perspective on opportunities in mobile money, near field communication (NFC) and the possibility of a mobile wallet in the future.
Yet, what I found most interesting were Green’s nuggets of advice for those already in the mobile space or looking to break into it and how to design products that end users want and need. Here’s a sample of what he shared:
- Relevancy is core. Be where your customers are.
- Simplicity is critical with any device as a service.
- Innovation isn’t just about technology; it’s about deep customer empathy. When creating mobile offerings, literally watch how your customers work and understand their pains. Intuit does more than 10,000 hours of follow me homes a year to observe its customers in action.
- Competition is healthy. Don’t be threatened by competitors, learn from them to build better products for your customers.
