If you had to add up all the items on your daily task list how long would it be? Think for a second, did you get everything? Or is there another list wadded up and stuffed in your pocket, or perhaps pasted to your computer monitor on a brightly colored Post-it?
Balancing work and personal to-do lists is part art, part science—and all important. After all, nobody wants to miss a deadline or worse yet, forget to pick up the kids from soccer practice.
To meet the needs of an on-the-go, time-crunched, multi-tasking world, Intuit engineers developed Weave, a new, mobile online to-do list that lets people track and manage activities and share them with other Weave users. Instead of the proverbial “string around the finger,” reminders are now in your fingertips on a mobile device.
The seeds for Weave were planted two years ago when a scrappy “two pizza team” set out to better understand the challenges facing small businesses that were not quite ready for a full-fledged accounting program, such as QuickBooks Online.
Bigger Than a Breadbox
Initially the team focused on helping very small businesses manage their finances – be it an app, service or piece of research. But as any innovator will tell attest, researching, designing and building an offering is not without its surprises. Weave evolved from a financial tracking app to an easy way for consumers and small businesses to track expenses, share updates with teams and check off that all important to-do list, all on a mobile device.
During follow-me home visits, business owners told the team they were less concerned with financial management and more concerned with how to successfully juggle the business of life. From hobbies and side jobs to clubs and kid pickup, these businesses needed help prioritizing day-to-day decisions to grow their business and balance running their busy lives.
Rinse, Wash, Repeat
The team then took a page from “The Lean Startup” by Eric Ries and focused on building and rapid-fire testing early iterations of Weave. In many cases the team changed the app daily, all based on user feedback.

A Global To-do
Today, Weave helps small businesses and consumers in more than 100 countries stay on track, manage tasks and expenses, and collaborate with up-to-date project information and to-do lists at their fingertips. With Weave, users can:
- Create to-do’s with optional notes, due dates and alerts.
- Manage activities with reminders and high-priority indicators.
- Share projects and tasks with other Weave users, and allow anyone to make edits and update progress.
- Send email updates directly to non-Weave users to keep them posted on the progress of a project.
- Track income and expenses in multiple currencies, along with time spent on any given activity.
